2" of new snow this week at the Huts. Gravel picked up 8" this week and more is forecasted for the weekend. Cascade Hut has space, hope to see you there. Last weekend a group triggered a sympathetic release on a northwest facing slope in the Middle Way. No one was in harms way but it was a good reminder to ski the safest terrain right now. Southwest trees on Cascade were reportedly a good run for the group. Last week saw new snow accumulations of 18 inches in the High Country around VR Huts. The snow pack was settling on any untracked snow on Sunday and Monday of this week. North facing slopes on road cuts and drainages were sliding. Watch out for terrain traps. The skiing on North facing slope was slow and unstable because of the 3 feet of TG snow underneath the new snow. The best and safest skiing was on west and southwest facing slopes where the old snow had formed more of a base from sun and wind. The run south of Middle Way "South Way" ran from a sympathetic skier release on Monday. Two inches of fresh snow this morning at the huts. New snow had triggered a slide in the Middle Way by this morning. Posted in: NoneView / Add Comment | 0 Comment(s) | Rating: 0 of 5 | Share: Twitter, FacebookNew SnowJanuary 18th, 2012 9:48am
Last week and this week storms brought a mere 2 inches of fresh snow to VR Huts. Not so dissappointing on Gravel Mountain and Ruby Basin which both received over 6 inches of fresh snow last week. The local snotel site is not working so until we get up high we won't know how much fell this week. More snow appears to be on the way, but I won't be counting any chickens before they hatch. This winter has been a reminder that accepting uncertainty is more reliable than how much snow will fall. Lots of wind and a little snow. Less than an inch at the huts and 2 inches at the Never Summer Snotel. The wind has brought down some trees and loaded the southeast facing slopes. For the die hard powder hounds there are turns to be found. Keep the caution up for logs and stumps and variable snow conditions. Might be better to practice yoga and meditate this New Years. if the snow conditions are getting you down maybe the Waiting For Snow Blog entry will help. Thanks to all our guests this Holiday Season who have kept things lively and fun at VR huts despite the low snow. Cheers and Happy New Year! December 22 was the last snow fall of 3 inches at the Never Summer Snotel site. We have had a full house at VR Huts this week and despite the low snow people have been skiing Nirvana bowl, Middle way, and Gravel Mountain. The blessing is that with low expectations we are more easily pleasantly surprised. Caution is still advised for hidden logs and rocks. Have a happy new year, whatever the snow gods bring. Never Summer Snotell reported 2 inches on 12/9. Other than that no big changes this week. Early season powder skiing in trees with no southerly aspect, the higher the better. Friday and Saturday were slim pickens with early season conditions exacerbated by high winds and no new snow last week. Trees with no southerly aspect are still the best bet for powder turns, the higher the better. Sunday shaped up on Gravel with 5 inches of new snow. We joked this weekend that the skiing was as bad as it gets, but the video shows that is not exactly true.

The 100 inches never came to Colorado but we'll take the 4-6 that did come last Friday night. Skiing around the huts is doable in the trees on Northerly aspects. It gets better the higher you go. The skin track is in up Cascade to the Middle Way. Other skiers scored this weekend enjoying 8-12 inches (depending on wind loading) of fresh snow on east Gravel with no one else around. Usually this area gets hammered on the weekend and being the only groomed trail system open in the state we expected this weekend to be no exception, but we were happy to be wrong. Check out the pictures on facebook and stay tuned for the report next weekend. The storm has passed and Jeremy has groomed the trails. I wish I was there to ski the Middle Way. It will be interesting to see what this storm did to the snowpack stability. Stay tuned for Jeremy's updates.

Wow! What a storm were having. As of 12pm we have well over a foot of new snow at the ranch. I just got back from lower gravel and it was thigh to waste deep and snowing hard enough to make me turn around. Visibility was and remains really bad. Currently snowing an inch a hour, or more! More later.....

Snow on Gravel Mountain was knee to thigh deep Monday and Tuesday. Settlements were heard on all aspects and angles. A 3 - 6 foot crown was observed above a recent slide on the northeast aspect of the Toilet Bowl. Attempts to cause a release on a steep north facing rollover were unsuccessful. Right now we are staying on low angle slopes and watching to see how the snow pack changes. Cold and snowy this morning. 7" of new snow last night at the ranch with 10" falling in higher elevations. With a high temp of 35 today and more snow coming tomorrow it should be here to stay for the year. The last couple of storms have been generous to our area. Last weeks dump allowed us to start snowmobiling to the higher terrain where the snow is really adding up. Around the ranch expect 4-15" depending on the aspect. At higher Elevations, 10,000' and above expect 15-36" and more on north aspects. The skiing up high is pretty impressive for this time of year if your willing to work for it. The snowmobiling is getting there but is only on trail at this point and count on going over some dirt here and there. Looks like a couple days of warm and sunny weather then there is the potential for big snows the day after turkey day. Mt. Baker in Washington is forecasted to get 100" from one storm, really. And it looks like it might be heading towards.........:) More later this week. Happy Holidays!!
